How to use “and” 5 times in a row grammatically:
A man owned a store called “This And That” and hired another man to make a sign for it. When it was finished the owner inspected the work. He discovered that the spaces were wrong so he said “the space between This and And and And and That is different. Please fix it”
IM SO ANGRY
Dear fanfic writers,
I find this very useful.
I don’t totally agree with this. “Said” is something of an invisible word (meaning your readers won’t notice it most of the time), but yeah, if you use it constantly, it will tend to grate. But synonyms grate, too. You don’t want to have your characters jeering and quavering and cautioning all the time. Too many descriptive synonyms for “said” can get irritating quickly. The fancier they get, the more they jump out at the reader.
IMHO, the best way to avoid repetitive dialogue tags is to use dialogue tags (“he said” or the equivalent) roughly a third of the time, action tags (“I’m beat.” He stretched and yawned. “Let’s hit the hay.”) a third of the time, and no tag at all (just untagged dialogue in quotes) a third of the time. Obviously this is an oversimplification, but it’s better than using dialogue tags every paragraph, because that does get monotonous quickly.
Also, you want to watch out for words that aren’t actually suitable as dialogue tags. You really don’t yawn a sentence, nor do you laugh it. These types of words (which describe an action other than speaking) are generally better off being used in action tags than in dialogue tags.
I agree with you. Read you favorite published author (and fanfic). They don’t use those other words. They probably use said. Or do the things you list above.
Helena Bonham Carter pretending to be Belatrix pretending to be Hermione pretending to be Belatrix
No but her acting was so good in this scene that I had to pause and zoom in on her face to make sure it wasn’t actually Emma in makeup, and even then I wasn’t totally convinced.
Emma acted out the scene first, and then Helena Bonham Carter mimicked what she did. so it was Helena Bonham Carter pretending to be Emma Watson pretending to be Helena Bonham Carter pretending to be Bellatrix pretending to be Hermione pretending to be Bellatrix.
Fan: When we first watch Supernatural we thought “he is really handsome” but then we found out that there were so much more than that, that you had so much more to offer. We think that a good actor can take you in a different place and is able not only to make you forget that you are watching an actor but also who makes you care about the character’s journey. And you really make people who watch you care about you and your character… and not just because you have a pretty face. You handle both tragedy and comedy with equal ability and your eyes speaks a thousand words even when you are saying nothing at all. So when Supernatural will end, don’t think about it as a conclusion, but as a stepping stone which will bring you to a bright future because you are Oscar material. [x]
so glad this came around again
Those tears in his eyes and him desperately trying to make a joke out of the situation so we wouldn’t notice them… Ugh never gonna be able to get over it
This always gets me. Because look how genuinely touched he is.
